11 Tips for the Perfect Straight Hair

Sleek and straight hair, the ultimate clean girl hairstyle. It’s the hairstyle that somehow manages to look chic with everything, from a fancy dress to your sporty Sunday sneakers and joggers, and it works for every hair length.

Want to get the look? We collected our best tips for you. From prepping in the shower to the finishing touched, these tips will help you straighten your hair like a pro without causing unnecessary damage, because we are working with heat after all!

1. Prepare your hair for straightening in the shower

Hair care items labeled with ‘smoothing’ may help to prepare the strands for the process by providing a lot of moisture. But let’s get clear about one thing: no shampoo or conditioner will give you straight hair.

For dry and brittle hair, it can help to comb conditioner through your hair and rinse gently after. Once you’re out of the shower, don’t towel dry your hair like crazy because this will enhance the natural curl. Instead, pat downwards gently.

2. Rough dry your hair

Briefly dry your hair with a hair dryer, but not too long cause this will frizz your hair and won’t give you a sleek finish. If you do want to blow-dry your hair out of the shower, try to dry until it’s 80% finished. Then apply your product and let the next 20% air dry.

3. Use the right brush

Use a brush that is a mix of nylon and boar bristle. Brushes that contain only nylon cause static on its own.

4. Wait until your hair is bone dry

Your hair should be bone dry when you straighten. If you hear sizzle or see steam your hair is not dry yet. Also, do not apply products to dry hair when straightening. Different from curling, the iron clamps down on the hair and so gives the product nowhere to go. Basically, you’re boiling the product into the follicle, which isn’t a great idea, especially when the product contains alcohol.

5. Use a heat protector oil or spray

You don’t want your hair to sizzle so please, do use a heat protecting oil or spray. Besides protecting your hair to the heat, it also moisturizes your hair and adds more shine.

6. Monitor your temperature

Nowadays most straighteners have heat control. The Silk’n SilkyStraight incorporates various features and the latest technologies to accommodate different hair textures and conditions, while keeping it safe. With 12 temperatures it’s the most versatile straightener, and suitable for different hair textures and styling needs.

7. Take one section at a time

Create sections so you can easily track your progress instead of randomly grabbing fistfuls of hair. Split your hair in the middle at the back and then bring it forward. This will give you two sections to work with and help you save time.

8. Always hold tension

Make sure to keep your hair sections pulled tautly, you’ll need fewer pass-throughs with the straightener. The more passes the more damage. Passing over hair more than once won’t kill the hair, but you shouldn’t need to do it as much if you’re pulling your hair and creating tension. Create tension, then pull the straightener downward starting from the root, it will help immensely.

9. Reduce frizz and add shine with finishing products

Even though our SilkyStraight already creates frizz free straight hair, it’s always good to nourish your hair with anti-frizz products. A light hold hairspray is a good idea, but wait for the hair to cool down first!

10. Use a straightener with advanced technology

The truth about straighteners is in the product. It’s okay to break the piggy bank for a good straightener, it’s about your hair and appearance after all!

11. Don’t forget about the double duty your straightener has

In addition to tip 10, straighteners can also function as a curling iron and give you beachy waves or tousled curls.
